Sponging and Sketching

It is recipe week at 52 {Christmas} Card Throwdown and we have a genius recipe for you. Guess you like one pot cooking ( quick, easy, less washing up and delicious), so do you like one layer cards (quick, challenging, no where to hide your mistakes and beautiful)? That's it for this week, one layer cards

I wanted to add the impression of layers so I opted for a sponging and masking technique. I have used the Simply Sketched stamp set, these branches do remind me of mistletoe. I stamped in black ink over the sponged blended colours and touched up the berries with a white gel pen.

The sentiment is from Season of Joy (again, it never goes out of fashion I think). I added a few droplets of water to bleed out the colour, like wet snow or a bokeh light effect and a swathe of rhinestones to echo the sweep of the silver heat embossed lanterns. These could be ornaments, another use of the Celebration set.

I enjoyed creating this card and am overall pleased with it, although for me the edges of the masked area could be a little crisper. I used post- it notes. Does anyone have a better idea? I always find masking tape rips the surface of the card.

  1. Lots of wonderful techniques used on your card Louise. Love the sponging and the embossing, and those rhinestones look lovely. Have a great weekend, hugs, Gill xx

  3. This is such a pretty card-love the spongy effect and it looks like it glistens. I am not sure what I would use. I may have used a card stalk to cover what I wanted not to be sponged and I would have used this special "scotch" tape that I bought at my stamp store. They told me it doesn't rip the paper and, so far, it is working

  4. This is so pretty. What a great idea to have your design either side of the clean white panel; I often use this layout but always with the pattern in the middle. Thanks for the inspiration.

  7. Gorgeous card Louise! Your sponging is stunning. Painter's tape or washi tape maybe?

  8. Louise, the rich sponged colors are gorgeous, and I love the bokeh effect of the water droplets! Super job this week!
As far as the masking goes - post-its tend to work well for me; just make sure the sticky side is down tight to the card base. I've also used pieces of copy/printer paper held down with hermafix repositionable adhesive - but then I have to sometimes go back with an adhesive eraser and pick up sticky dots left behind after removing the mask.

  9. This card is so beautiful. I love the colours in the inking and the water dots. In fact I love everything about it.
I always use masking tape and copy paper for masking. I think I got my current roll from Inkylicious. It is not too tacky but if I have a roll that is, I take off some of the sticky against some fabric (that is not hairy!), usually my jeans.
